The tea ceremony is a time-honored exchange to show respect for the family and to bring the couple good luck. The tea that is served is lightly sweetened with lotus seed and red date. The sweetness of the tea symbolizes the wish for sweet relations between the bride and groom and their new families.
The groom’s family will be served tea starting with the groom’s parents and then elders in order of seniority. The bride and groom serve tea to their parents as a sign of respect and thanks. The bride and groom kneel before their elder and present a cup of tea. After each elder takes a sip, they give their well-wishes and hand the couple a lucky red envelope (will be provided at the ceremony), which traditionally contains money or jewelry. The lucky red envelopes (lai see) symbolize good luck and prosperity and are given at weddings and at new year. Traditionally the bride serves tea to her parents at home before the wedding, but nowadays it is not uncommon for both families to be served tea at the tea ceremony.
The tea ceremony will be held at the Bedford Village Inn immediately preceeding the wedding ceremony. Please check the wedding events page for any updates. A request for the honor to serve you tea will be mailed with the wedding invitation. All guests are welcome to watch the tea ceremony.
